Tantalizing Tea Facts
Tea is the 2nd most consumed beverage in the world with more than 3 billion cups being consumed every day across the world. It’s no wonder with its soothing aroma and the astounding array of health benefits it offers.
Tea is chock full of vitamins and other healthy components including vitamins B1, B2 and B6 along with potassium, manganese, folic acid and calcium. Below, are just a few of the health benefits from tea.
Main Benefit: Freshens Breath
Did you know that black tea is loaded with polyphenols, which fight plaque and cut back on bacteria growth in the mouth?
Weight loss and diabetes prevention are two added bonuses to drinking black tea, as well.
Main Benefit: Promotes Weight Loss
Polyphenols are the active weight loss agent found in most teas. White tea is loaded with polyphenols, even more so than other types of tea because it is processed considerably less than most. In fact, the antioxidants in one cup of white tea equals the same amount you’d get by drinking 10 cups of apple juice.
This tea drink promotes a healthy, even skin tone. White tea is also linked to preventing colon cancer and other types of cancer, too.
Main Benefit: Relieves Headaches
Ginger tea is known to fight headaches, just as quickly as popping an aspirin. Ginger tea also helps soothe upset stomachs, too.
Main Benefit: Lowers Anxiety
Passionflower tea contains the flavone chrysin which provides relief for those who suffer with obsessive thoughts (i.e. – anxiety).
Main Benefit: Libido Booster
Ginseng tea offers a sexual boost for both men and women by increasing libido, fighting erectile dysfunction and raising sperm count in men.
Coffee drinkers are painfully aware of the crash and burn, halting side effects of drinking “Joe”. This happens because the caffeine in coffee immediately goes into our systems and hits it like a Mac truck giving us a short jolt and then, leaving as quickly as it came. Tea, however, contains antioxidants which slows the release of caffeine throughout your system allowing a longer “alert period” and lowering the risk of a crash.
Due to the fact that chai tea is my favorite drink on the planet and her namesake, it would be an utter travesty if I didn’t discuss my love of chai tea. It’s a love that runs deep. Everything about chai tea makes it the ultimate drink. From the warmth to the spicy aroma to the creamy texture to the multiple health benefits from partaking in this “drink of the gods” — it is truly a drink like no other.
1 cinnamon stick
3 cups of water
6 whole cloves
6 whole cardamom pods
4 whole black peppercorns
1 (one inch) piece of ginger root (peeled and sliced)
2 black tea bags or 1 tablespoon of loose black tea
2 tablespoons of brown sugar
1 cup milk (low-fat dairy, soy or almond milk)
Combine water, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, ginger and peppercorns into a pot and heat on stovetop until boiling. Cover and lower heat. Simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to steep for 10 minutes. Return to heat and boil. After boiling, remove from heat and add tea bags. Cover and allow to steep for 5 more minutes. Strain out solids using a fine mesh sieve and transfer liquid back to the pot. Add milk and brown sugar and place over low heat for about a minute. Pour into mugs and serve.
